Orange Crush at the Bear's Den
Maya felt like a total spy at Leo's party, lurking behind the punch bowl, watching the cool kids cluster by the speakers like they owned the place. Her orange crop top felt suddenly too bright, practically screaming *look at me* when she'd rather disappear.
"You look like you're plotting something," said this guy in a bear costume—like, full fuzzy head and everything. She'd been talking to a literal bear mascot for five minutes without realizing it.
Maya laughed so hard spinach dip shot up her nose. Great. Now she was the girl who snorted dip while talking to the bear. "I'm Maya. Bear mascot, or just really committed to the bit?"
"Jake. And this," he gestured to his fuzzy brown head, "is my punishment for losing that bet about the zombie movie."
The zombie movie. Right. Everyone at school had been obsessed with it, but Maya had been too busy with AP classes and her mom's endless health kicks to care. Speaking of which—the spinach dip situation.
"I have spinach in my teeth, don't I?"
Jake's costume head muffled something that sounded like "It's kind of iconic, honestly." He unzipped the bear suit enough to reveal an actual cute face underneath. Messy brown hair, dimples, the works.
Something shifted. The party noise faded to static. Suddenly Maya wasn't spying on the cool kids anymore—she was talking to one.
"Wanna get some air?" Jake asked. "Being a bear is actually exhausting."
They ended up on the porch, sharing his emergency stash of chocolate (because spinach dip alone was tragic). Jake admitted he'd only come to the party because his friends dragged him, and Maya confessed she'd spent forty minutes picking out that orange shirt only to feel ridiculous.
"It works on you," he said, and for once, she believed him.
The zombie reference clicked—those movies weren't about the undead. They were about teenagers going through motions, waiting for something real. Tonight wasn't perfect, but it was real.
"Same time next week?" Jake asked as her mom texted her pickup location. "I'll skip the bear suit."
Maya smiled, orange shirt feeling suddenly right. "Deal. But maybe skip the zombie movie talk too."
