Orange Crush

Maya's fingers trembled as she adjusted the filter on her iPhone, her reflection staring back— newly dyed orange hair, vibrant and unapologetic. Seventeen and finally ready to stop shrinking.

"What's with the pumpkin head, freak?" Jason's voice cut through the cafeteria noise. His crew snickered. Classic bull behavior—puffing out his chest, targeting anyone who dared to stand out.

Maya's instinct was to shrink, to disappear into her phone screen like she had a million times before. But something shifted. She'd spent years watching other people live boldly through her Instagram feed, envying their courage. Today would be different.

"Actually," Maya said, her voice surprisingly steady, "it's called tangerine dream. And it's for the drama showcase—you know, that thing you're too scared to audition for?"

Silence. Then laughter from the theater kids' table. Jason's face flushed the exact shade of a bad sunburn.

"Whatever," he muttered, suddenly fascinated by his tray. "Not worth it."

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She'd never spoken back like that. Never.

Her phone buzzed—three new followers from the drama table. A DM: *You were amazing. We're doing prep in the auditorium after school if you want to come.*

For years, Maya had watched life happen to other people through her iPhone screen. Today, she'd finally stepped into her own frame—orange hair and all.

She typed back: *I'll be there.*

Then she turned off her phone, lifted her chin, and took her first real bite of life in years.
