Orange Crush

Maya's phone buzzed on her nightstand at 2 AM. The group chat was blowing up again.

"You gotta do it, Maya. Just be a bear about it," Jordan typed. The purple light from her screen made everything look underwater.

Bear. That was their new slang for being brave, gutsy, taking risks. Jordan was always talking about being a bear.

Maya stared at herself in the mirror. Same boring brown hair. Same boring everything. She thought about the box of electric orange hair dye she'd bought on impulse, hidden under her bed like contraband.

If she did this, her parents would flip. If she didn't, she'd keep being the quiet girl in the back of every class.

"What if I look stupid?" she typed back.

"What if you look FIRE?" Jordan replied. "Live a little, Maya. Bear up."

At school the next day, Maya's hair was a shock of bright orange that practically glowed under the fluorescent lights. She could feel everyone staring. Some kids whispered. Others actually nodded, like they respected the audacity.

Jordan high-fived her in the hallway. "Now THAT'S bear energy."

But by lunch, Maya's stomach was in knots. Her friend since third grade, Chloe, sat down at their usual table, stared at Maya's hair, and just... sighed.

"You're just like them now," Chloe said quietly. "You didn't used to care what people thought."

The words hit harder than Maya expected. Because Chloe was right. She'd done it for Jordan, for the group chat validation, for the chance to finally be someone who got noticed.

"I just wanted to—" Maya started, but Chloe was already gathering her stuff.

"Whatever. You look cool, okay? You got what you wanted."

Maya watched her friend walk away. Her reflection in the cafeteria window showed a stranger with orange hair and fake confidence. She'd tried so hard to be a bear, she'd forgotten how to be herself.

Her fingers found her phone. She could fix this. She could own up to it.

"Hey," she texted Chloe. "You're right. I did it for the wrong reasons. Can we talk after school?"

The three dots bounced. Then: "Only if you're coming as my friend. Not as whoever this is."

Maya smiled for the first time all day. The hair was staying. But the real work was just beginning.
