Orange Crush

The bathroom mirror showed a stranger. My hair, once boring brown, now blazed ORANGE like I'd stuck my head in a Fanta can. Mom was gonna lose it. Good.

At school, I kept waiting for someone to notice. To say something. Anything. But everyone just scrolled past like I was invisible. That was, until Jake "THE BULL" Morrison slammed his hand against my locker.

"Nice hair, Freak." He smirked, his friends chuckling behind him like they'd practiced it.

I wanted to disappear. Instead, I met his eyes. "Thanks, Jake. Your personality matches your forehead."

The hallway went dead silent.

But here's the thing about standing up to a bully—you don't realize how much power they have over everyone else's fear until you're the one refusing to play along.

By lunch, the story had warped ten times. Apparently I'd cursed Jake out. Threatened him. Whatever.

Then I found the note in my backpack: "I SAW WHAT HAPPENED. MEET ME BEHIND THE GYM. - A"

An anonymous note? Seriously? I felt like I was in some middle-grade SPY novel, except the stakes were just my social survival.

Behind the gym, I found not Jake's crew or some secret admirer, but Sophia from my English class. She had her phone out, filming something.

"I've been documenting how Jake treats people," she said, all business. "My brother dealt with his crap last year. You stood up to him today. Nobody does that."

"So you're... what? spying on him?"

"Gathering evidence." She shrugged. "Wanna help?"

Something about the way she said it—like she actually trusted me to be brave—made me nod.

We never took down the bull. Real life isn't that neat. But we did start a group chat where people could share what he was doing. Teachers actually listened when multiple students came forward together.

And my hair? Mom grounded me for a month. But when I washed out the dye two weeks later, something felt different. I wasn't the same kid who'd looked in the mirror wondering who she was.

Some battles you lose. Some you win. The important part is figuring out which ones are worth fighting.
