Orange Courts and Zombie States
Maya dragged herself through the hallway like a zombie, her backpack feeling heavier than usual. Three hours of sleep APUSH study session will do that to you. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, making her already-throbbing headache worse.
"Yo, Maya! You coming to the courts?" Leo called from his locker. He was already decked out in his bright orange padel uniform—the color that their weirdly intense coach claimed represented "fire and passion." Whatever that meant when you're just hitting balls back and forth.
"I'm literally dead," Maya groaned, leaning against the lockers. "I think I'm still running on zombie mode from that history test."
"That's exactly why you need to come! Fresh air, exercise, plus Jenna's team is playing today." He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.
Maya perked up slightly. Jenna, the junior with the perfect smile and the way she laughed at Maya's terrible jokes in bio lab? The one she'd been lowkey obsessing over for weeks?
"Fine," Maya sighed, letting Leo drag her toward the padel courts. "But if I pass out, you're explaining to my mom why her daughter collapsed mid-match."
The afternoon sun warmed the orange court surface as Maya's team warmed up. Her exhaustion started fading, replaced by that familiar pre-game adrenaline. Then she saw Jenna across the net, stretching in her own orange uniform, hair pulled back in a messy ponytail that looked somehow perfect.
"Good luck, zombie girl," Jenna called with a grin that made Maya's stomach do flips.
"You too," Maya managed, probably sounding more awkward than she intended.
The game was intense—Maya diving for returns, the satisfying thwack of the padel racket against the ball, Leo whooping like crazy whenever someone scored. By the third set, Maya wasn't thinking about her zombie state or the history test anymore. She was just moving, playing, feeling alive.
After their team won, Jenna collapsed on the bench beside Maya, both of them sweaty and exhausted but grinning like crazy.
"You were amazing," Jenna said, bumping Maya's shoulder. "Total transformation from zombie to beast mode."
"Yeah, well," Maya laughed, breathless, "sometimes you just need to hit some balls to feel human again."
"Totally." Jenna stood up, grabbing an orange slice from the team snack bag. "Hey, a bunch of us are going to get boba after this. You should come. Unless you have more zombie-mode studying to do?"
Maya looked at Jenna, at the orange slice in her hand, at the team still celebrating on the court. History test forgotten. Backpack forgotten.
"Nah," Maya said, feeling lighter than she had all week. "I'm in."
