Orange Court Crush

padelorangebull

The neon orange padel ball bounced off the back wall, missing my racket by like, three inches. My face burned hotter than the summer sun beating down on the court.

"Nice try, rookie," Bull said, smirking. His real name was Brad, but everyone called him Bull because he charged the net like an absolute tank. Senior, varsity everything, and somehow even his sweat looked athletic.

I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand. Stupid of me to agree to this.

"You sure you don't want me to go easy on you?" Bull asked, spinning his racket like a pro.

"I'm good," I lied. My hands were literally shaking.

This was supposed to be my moment. Me, Maya Chen, finally stepping out of my shadow-box. I'd been watching Bull and his crew dominate the padel courts since freshman year, always on the sidelines, always the quiet one with the orange backpack and zero confidence. But today was different. Today, I was tired of watching.

The truth? I'd been practicing. Like, actually practicing. Every morning at 6 AM before school, hitting against the wall until my arms felt like jelly. And now, here I was, challenging the Bull himself.

"Game point," Bull announced, tossing me another ball. This one was bright orange against the blue court surface.

He served hard. The ball cracked against my racket strings, popping up high—a perfect opportunity. Bull rushed the net, all intimidation and zero defense. My heart pounded against my ribs. This was it. My one shot.

I didn't think. I just swung.

The ball sailed past his outstretched arm, landing perfectly in the corner. Silent. Dead.

Bull's jaw dropped. I mean, literally dropped.

"Did you just..."

"Game," I said, my voice suddenly steady.

He stared at me for a second, then started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, genuine laughing. "Okay, that was actually kind of sick."

"Maya!" my friend Jasmine yelled from the fence. "You literally just defeated the Bull! What is HAPPENING?"

But that wasn't even the crazy part. The crazy part was that Bull tossed me his phone.

"We need another player for the tournament next weekend," he said, still grinning. "You in?"

I looked at that orange ball rolling near the fence, then back at him.

"Yeah," I said. "I'm in."

And just like that, the girl who never played anything but defense became part of the team. Sometimes you just have to swing for the corners, you know?
