Orange Court Confidential
Maya smoothed her racket grip, palms sweating. First day at the exclusive Padel Club, courtesy of her dad's new promotion, and she felt like a total fraud. The girls here wore matching neon outfits and coordinated perfectly. Maya wore her brother's hand-me-down shorts and a faded orange t-shirt.
"You're up, new girl," called Chloe, the undisputed queen of the Saturday morning squad. Her voice was nice enough, but her eyes screamed *imposter alert*.
Maya stepped onto the padel court. The glass walls reflected everything—her nervous stance, Chloe's perfect hair flick, the way everyone's phones were already out, recording. This wasn't just a game. It was social warfare with racquets.
Then Maya saw it: Chloe's phone, propped against her bag, camera pointed toward the locker room. Live. Recording.
Every instinct screamed *look away*. But Maya couldn't. She'd moved schools four times, learned to read rooms like a hawk. This wasn't innocent. This was weird.
Later, hiding in the bathroom stall, Maya did something that made her stomach twist. She pulled out her phone, opened the Instagram story Chloe had posted, and zoomed in. There, reflected in the mirror behind Chloe, was Sasha—Chloe's supposed BFF—crying. Caption: "Best friends forever! 💕"
Two-faced much?
Maya peeled apart the orange segment she'd grabbed from the concession stand. Its juice stung her paper cut, sharp and real. She could post what she'd found. Could finally be the one with the tea, the insider, the girl everyone whispered about. Instead, she stuffed the orange peel in her pocket and walked out.
"Hey," Maya said, approaching Sasha by the courts. "Wanna hit some padel? I suck, but like, I'm trying to not embarrass myself completely."
Sasha's red-rimmed eyes widened. Then she smiled—genuine, not Instagram fake. "Same. Let's get destroyed together."
As they played terribly and laughed loudly, Maya caught Chloe watching, phone down for once. Some secrets weren't worth spying on. Sometimes the real power wasn't knowing dirt—it was choosing whose court you wanted to play on.
