Orange Cat Summer
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, her normally frizzy **hair** now transformed into sleek box braids that took her mom five hours to complete. This was it—her first real pool party since transferring to Northwood High, and she was finally going to make friends.
"You good in there?" her little brother called through the door. "Ginger's scratching at the door again."
**Orange** fur flashed through the crack as the family's fat tabby cat nudged the door open with his head. Maya laughed, scooping up the cat who immediately started purring like a tiny motor.
"You're gonna be fine," she told herself, setting Ginger down. "Just vibing. Chill. Whatever the kids say these days."
The **pool** party was already popping when she arrived, music thumping from Bluetooth speakers and the smell of sunscreen hanging heavy in the July heat. Maya's stomach did somersaults as she stepped onto the concrete deck in her new orange bikini—matching Ginger's fur, she'd joked earlier.
"Hey! You made it!" It was Chloe, the girl from her English class who'd actually invited her. "Come meet everyone."
Suddenly, self-consciousness crashed over Maya like a wave. What if they thought she was trying too hard? What if someone made fun of her hair? What if—
"I love your braids!" someone squealed. "Those are so fire."
"For real, those must've taken forever," another girl added. "My mom would never have the patience."
Maya exhaled, shoulders dropping. They weren't judging. They were actually... impressed?
Hours later, floating on her back in the pool under a sky turning pink with sunset, Maya realized something important: sometimes the scariest moments become the best ones. The boy she'd been crushing on since week one sat beside her on the pool edge.
"Your hair looks really cool like that," Jason said, splashing water at her. "I mean, if you don't mind me saying."
Maya grinned, splashing back. "I don't mind at all."
As she walked home that evening, damp hair smelling of chlorine and skin tingling with that particular feeling only summer brings, Maya spotted Orange Ginger waiting by the door like he always did. Some things never changed—but sometimes, that was exactly what you needed to realize everything else was falling into place.
