Orange Cable Courage
Maya's fingers shook as she coiled the orange cable around her arm. Three inches from the jack. That's when her stride would break, every single time.
"You got this, May," Layla said, collapsing onto Maya's bed and scrolling through her phone. "Stop overthinking."
Easy for her to say. Layla had performed at last year's showcase like she was born onstage—zero hesitation, zero second-guessing. Meanwhile, Maya had been hiding in her room practicing her bass line for weeks, too scared to even tell her parents she'd signed up.
A movement outside caught Maya's eye. A fox— sleek, rust-colored, impossibly graceful—slipped through the backyard fence. It paused, ears swiveling, then melted into the shadows.
"Did you see that?" Maya whispered.
"See what?"
"The fox. It was right there."
Layla barely glanced up. "Cool, cool. But can we focus? You're gonna crush it."
Maya sighed and sat on the edge of her bed, the orange cable still coiled around her wrist like a promise she couldn't keep. "What if I'm not ready? What if everyone thinks I'm a joke?"
Layla finally put her phone down. "First of all, nobody's watching you as hard as you're watching yourself. Second, remember when we went to that lake house and you swam across to the island even though you were terrified? That was pure bear energy. You're stronger than you think."
Maya smiled despite herself. "Bear energy? Really?"
"It's a thing. Look it up." Layla sat up and bumped her shoulder against Maya's. "Besides, you're my friend. I've got your back, even if you choke. Which you won't."
Something shifted in Maya's chest. The fox outside—quick, clever, adaptable. The bear inside—strong, resilient, brave. She wasn't just one thing. She could be both.
She stood up and plugged in the orange cable. The amp hummed to life.
"Alright," Maya said. "Watch this."
