Orange Blaze at the Pool

Maya stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching her oversized sun hat like a shield. The vibrant orange streaks she'd dyed into her hair last night—a spontaneous summer rebellion—now felt like flashing neon signs screaming "look at me."

"Yo Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Tyler called, doing a cannonball that sent **water** spraying everywhere.

Her stomach did that familiar flip. Being seen—really seen—still terrified her, even after three years of high school. But this summer was supposed to be different. New Maya. Brave Maya. Not the girl who hid in the back of the classroom.

She noticed a stray **cat** watching from the fence, its tail flicking with judgmental curiosity. The orange furball seemed to mock her hesitation.

"Whatever," Maya muttered, tossing her hat onto the lounge chair. The orange streaks caught the sunlight—bright, impossible, perfect. Something about seeing them there, real and unhidden, made her chest loosen.

She dove in.

The **water** swallowed her whole, cool and accepting. For a moment, weight could be nothing. No expectations, no awkward conversations, no pressure to be interesting. Just her and the liquid silence.

When she surfaced, gasping, Tyler was right there. "Nice hair," he said, actually looking at her instead of through her. "The orange? It's sick."

Maya blinked **water** from her eyes. "You think?"

"Totally." He grinned. " matches that ginger cat that's always hanging around here."

The cat meowed from the fence as if on cue.

Something shifted in Maya's chest—the kind of shift that happens when you realize everyone else was just as nervous as you were. She laughed, really laughed, and felt the orange streaks in her hair like a crown she'd finally learned to wear.

"Race you to the other side," she challenged, already paddling backward.

"You're on," Tyler called, already pushing off the wall.

The cat watched them race, unimpressed, as Maya finally stopped hiding.
