Orange At The Top

Maya's iPhone screen glowed in the darkness of her bedroom, the blue light washing over her face as she doom-scrolled through The Group Chat for the third time tonight.

"u guys coming to jake's pool party tmrw?" someone had typed.

Maya stared at her thumbs hovering over the keyboard. The social pyramid at Northwood High was real, and she was currently somewhere in the middle — not invisible, but definitely not at the tip where the cool kids sat.

Then she saw it: a new post from Brianna, the queen bee herself. "ORANGE SODA ENERGY DRINKS are taking over! Join my team and start earning 💸 DM me for details!"

It was a pyramid scheme. Actually. The popular girls were literally running a pyramid scheme at school, and somehow they'd made it seem cool. Maya's stomach twisted.

The next day at the pool party, Maya stood by the edge in her orange bikini — the same color as those ridiculous energy drinks — clutching her iPhone like a security blanket. Water reflected sunlight across everyone's faces, making everything look bright and perfect and fake.

"Maya!" Brianna called from her throne on a lounge chair. "Have you tried Orange Fizz yet? It's literally changing my life."

Maya's heart pounded. This was her moment to climb the pyramid or stay exactly where she was. She thought about her dad's lecture last week about "multi-level marketing" and how they preyed on people who wanted to belong.

"Actually," Maya said, her voice shaking but steady, "I'm good. I heard those things taste like sunscreen mixed with regret."

Silence. Then someone snorted. Then Brianna laughed.

"You're savage, Maya," Brianna said, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes.

Later, as Maya sat with her feet in the pool, her phone buzzed. A new group chat notification. Not the popular kids' one — something better.

"u coming to marco's house saturday? we're doing a real pyramid scheme. like scheme-y scheme. orange snacks only."

Maya smiled. Some pyramids were worth climbing, some weren't, and the best ones involved friends who'd laugh with you in the shallow end.

She dove into the water, iPhone safely on dry land, and finally felt like she could breathe.
