Orange at the Pyramid's Peak

Maya clicked through another Instagram profile, her thumb moving on autopilot. She wasn't technically a spy, but at 2 AM, scrolling through the feed of Northwood High's social pyramid definitely felt like undercover work.

The pyramid structure was obvious: seniors at the base supporting juniors, then sophomores, with freshman rock-bottom except for the chosen few. And at the very peak? The trio of seniors whose parties determined your entire social existence.

"You still stalking them?" her best friend Chloe whispered across their FaceTime call. "It's giving obsessed."

"It's giving research," Maya shot back, though her stomach did that flippy thing it always did when she got defensive. "Tyler's party is literally this weekend. If we don't get invited, we're socially dead by Monday."

The problem was that Maya existed in the weird middle space—too quirky for the popular kids, too normal for the outcasts. She'd been rocking this giant orange hoodie since seventh grade, her literal safety blanket against the world.

Then came Thursday. The cafeteria incident.

Maya reached for her usual orange soda, but her backpack snagged on something. The next second, an orange explosion happened—soda everywhere, all over some senior's pristine white sneakers.

The entire cafeteria went silent. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. Social suicide.

But then Tyler himself started cracking up. "Dude, that was legendary." He high-fived her. "You're coming to my party Saturday. Anyone who commits chaos like that is VIP material."

Maya sat there, orange-stained and mystified. Chloe was already calling it: "The spy who infiltrated the pyramid with an orange soda. That's literally your origin story now."

Sometimes the coolest moments aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones where you spill orange soda all over your carefully constructed anxiety and accidentally climb the social pyramid sideways.

Maya took a sip of her remaining soda. Maybe being invisible wasn't the goal after all.
