Orange at the Bottom of the Pyramid
The social pyramid at Northwood High had specific tiers, and Maya had spent freshman year planted firmly at the base. Not even a glamorous base—more like the crumbling foundation everyone forgot about.
Until the night she dumped an entire bottle of orange Kool-Aid over her head.
"You're actually doing this?" Leo asked, sprawled across her bed while her pit bull mix, Potato, snored against his leg. "Your mom's gonna lose it."
"That's the point." The cheap dye burned her scalp like regret, but she leaned into the sting. She wanted to feel something.
Her hair had been sandy brown, forgettable, the same color as approximately 40% of the student body. Perfect for blending in. Perfect for staying invisible.
Now it was neon orange.
The next morning, Potato whimpered at the door like he knew she was about to make a mistake. Maya's fingers shook as she pulled her hair into a messy bun—no hiding it now.
First period hallway. The absolute worst time to debut a new identity.
People stared. Like, actually stopped scrolling and stared.
"Is that...?" someone whispered.
Maya's chest tightened. This was it. She'd become That Girl with the Orange Hair,永久 relegated to weirdo status. Maybe she should've stayed invisible. Maybe she should've just—
"Yo, that's actually sick."
She turned. Chloe, who sat at the literal apex of the pyramid, was giving her a once-over. "Like, genuinely bold. I've been wanting to do something with my hair but my mom would literally kill me."
"Oh." Maya blinked. "Thanks?"
"What shade did you use? It's giving sunset energy."
"...Kool-Aid."
Chloe burst out laughing. "No way. That's lowkey genius." She fell into step beside her. "I'm Chloe, by the way. I feel like we've had, what, five classes together and never spoken?"
"Maya."
"Well, Maya, you should come to Ryan's party tonight. Bring the vibes. And maybe tell me your secrets."
That night, Maya stared at herself in the mirror, Potato's wet nose bumping her elbow. The orange hair was still orange. The social pyramid was still a pyramid. But somehow, she wasn't at the bottom anymore.
Or maybe the whole pyramid thing was cap.
Maybe you just had to stop trying to climb and start setting yourself on fire instead.
Maya smiled, and for the first time, she liked what she saw.
