Operation Stalk Smile
Maya had been executing Operation Crush Watch for three weeks. She'd mastered the art of hallway spy-craft—catching glimpses of Jake between classes, memorizing his schedule (AP Bio third period, lunch table near the windows), even accidentally-on-purpose liking his Instagram posts from last summer. This was normal, right? Totally not obsessive.
Then came the lightning strike of opportunity: Jake invited her to study at The Cosmic Bean after school. THE Cosmic Bean. Where the cool kids went. Maya spent forty-five minutes perfecting her hair, five minutes panicking about what to wear, and exactly zero seconds considering that ordering a spinach-artichoke dip might be a tactical error.
Jake was already there, chemistry textbook spread out like he actually intended to study. His smile did something genuinely unfair to her stomach.
"Hey!" He waved her over. "Saved you a seat."
They talked about everything and nothing—his terrible science puns, her obsession with obscure indie bands, the way Mr. Harrison always gave pop quizzes on Fridays. Maya felt like she was floating, powered by pure caffeine and the way Jake looked at her like she was actually interesting.
Then came the spinach incident.
She laughed at one of his jokes—genuinely laughed—and a piece of spinach escaped her corner. Jake's eyes widened. He didn't say anything. He just kept staring at her mouth while she kept talking, completely unaware that she was now a walking vegetable disaster.
Twenty minutes later,当她 excused herself to use the restroom and caught her reflection in the mirror, she actually died. Spinach. In her teeth. The entire time. Jake had probably been too nice to mention it, or worse—he'd noticed and was now internally screaming.
She considered faking her own death. Moving to Alaska. Becoming a spinach farmer.
Instead, she walked back out, where Jake was still waiting, still smiling like nothing had changed.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
Maya took a breath. "You know how I had spinach in my teeth?"
His face turned pink. "I didn't want to make it weird!"
"Jake, you could've told me. I've been walking around looking like I tried to photosynthesize."
"Honestly, I was just..." He rubbed his neck. "Kinda glad you felt comfortable enough to be yourself around me. Even with the spinach situation."
Maya's heart did something incredibly dangerous. Maybe Operation Crush Watch was over. Maybe something real was just beginning.
