Operation: Social Butterfly
My phone buzzed for the third time in five minutes. Another group chat blowup. Honestly, sometimes I felt like a total **spy**, lurking in the digital shadows, watching everyone else live their best lives while I sat on the sidelines decoding social hierarchies like classified intel.
"What's up, buttercup?" Maya's voice broke my Instagram trance. She plopped beside me on the front porch steps, Chipotle burrito in hand like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Maya. My ride-or-die since fourth grade, even though she'd gone full popular freshman year while I remained comfortably mid-tier. Sometimes I wondered if she kept me around as her charity case **friend**, or if she actually still vibed with my awkward energy.
"Just decoding the morning tea," I muttered, showing her the screenshot someone had leaked of Jordan's private DMs.
Her eyes widened. "Oof. That's gonna be interesting at lunch today."
Suddenly, her golden retriever Luna came barreling out the front door, tail going nuclear, carrying what looked suspiciously like Jordan's favorite hoodie in her mouth.
"Luna, DROP IT!"
The **dog** took off like a rocket, and we scrambled after her through the neighborhood, laughing like idiots as Luna led us on a merry chase through Mrs. Henderson's prize-winning petunias (she would NOT be pleased) and past the basketball court where Tyler and his squad were absolutely destroying it at HORSE.
We finally tackled Luna—gently—three blocks later, retrieving a slobber-covered but still salvageable hoodie.
Maya collapsed on the grass beside me, both of us breathing hard, faces flushed. "Okay, so we might have literally just saved Jordan from total social suicide. That hoodie's got half the cafeteria's phone numbers written inside the tag."
I looked at my actual best friend, hair everywhere, dignity gone, burrito long abandoned, and realized something.
"You know what?" I said, grinning. "Being a social spy is exhausting. I think I'm retiring."
Maya snorted. "Good. I was gonna fire you anyway. Your intel's been trash lately."
We both cracked up as Luna licked Maya's face enthusiastically, and for the first time in forever, I didn't feel like I was watching from the outside. I was exactly where I needed to be.
