Operation Smoothie Disaster

spinachfriendspyswimming

The spinach was supposed to be my glow-up era. Literally.

"You're actually drinking that?" Maya wrinkled her nose at the murky green slush in my hand.

"It's called taking care of myself," I said, though secretly I wanted to gag. "Chloe does this every morning and her skin is literally perfect."

Chloe, who had somehow transcended to a higher social plane over the summer. Chloe, who used to be my friend before she became Chloe™. Now I was just... background character energy.

"Whatever," Maya said. "Just don't spill it at the party tonight."

The party. Jordan's annual pool party. The social event of the season. The place where I would prove I was still relevant, still part of the group, still worthy of group chat invitations that weren't just mass forwards.

I spent three hours curling my hair. Three. The things we do for validation.

When I arrived, the pool was already chaos—bodies everywhere, music thumping, someone doing a cannonball off the diving board. And there she was. Chloe. Holding court in the shallow end like she owned the water, surrounded by the people who used to be my people too.

I froze by the snack table. This was fine. This was totally fine. I'd just...

I'd spy a little. Just casually. Observe. See what I was missing. Like, what was the vibe? What were they talking about? Were they talking about me?

I crept closer, pretending to examine the veggie tray with extreme interest.

"...and honestly," Chloe's voice carried over the music, "I feel like some people are just stuck in last year, you know? Like, evolve or whatever?"

My face burned. That was—that was definitely about me.

"Yeah," someone else agreed. "It's awkward when people don't get the message."

The message. The message that I'd been quietly phased out. The message that friendship had an expiration date I hadn't known about.

I turned to escape, but my foot caught on something—someone's abandoned flip-flop—and suddenly I was airborne. The veggie tray went flying. I went flying.

I hit the water with a splash so dramatic it actually silenced the music for a second.

Resurfacing, I saw it floating beside me like a tragic green iceberg: the leftover spinach dip from the veggie tray, now adorning my hair like a crown.

Someone snorted. Then laughter. Not mean laughter, just—the kind that happens when something is objectively hilarious.

I treaded water, spinach dripping into my eyes, and caught Chloe's gaze. For a second, she almost looked sympathetic. Then someone whispered something in her ear and she looked away.

"Okay, that was iconic," Maya called from the edge. "But also, you have spinach in your hair, bestie."

I laughed. Actually laughed. Because what else could I do? I literally looked like a salad.

"Help me out," I said, paddling toward the ladder. "And then we're getting pizza. Actual pizza. No vegetables allowed."

Maya reached for my hand. "Deal. The glow-up can wait till tomorrow."

The spinach washed out. The friendship with Maya stayed. Some things were worth more than glowing up.
