Operation: Poolside
I was totally that person lurking in the corner at Jessica's pool party, clutching my Solo cup of orange soda like it was a lifeline. The whole situation screamed 'I don't belong here' – Jessica was literally the most popular girl in sophomore year, and I was just her chemistry lab partner who somehow made the guest list.
My best friend Maya had dared me to 'spy' on Tyler, who supposedly had the biggest crush on me. But let's be real, the only thing Tyler was crushing was his third beer while attempting to impress everyone with his terrible cannonball into the pool. Not exactly boyfriend material, tbh.
I was mentally calculating my escape route when I felt something brush against my leg. I looked down to see this calico cat weaving through the crowd like it owned the place. The cat (which I later learned was named Mango, ironically) kept staring at me with these judgmental eyes, almost like it knew exactly how out of place I felt.
'You good?' Maya appeared beside me, stealing a sip of my drink. 'You've been standing there for twenty minutes looking like you're conducting surveillance on the whole party.'
I shrugged, trying to play it cool. 'Just observing the ecosystem. You know, for science.'
'The only science here is how Tyler's still managing to embarrass himself,' Maya cracked.
But then something weird happened – Tyler actually swam over to where I was standing, dripping wet and smiling awkwardly. 'Hey,' he said, 'I noticed you watching me. Is it that obvious I suck at swimming?'
I froze. This was NOT part of the mission brief. But somehow, the cat rubbing against my ankles gave me this weird burst of confidence.
'Actually,' I said, 'I was admiring your form. Very... expressive.'
Tyler laughed, and for the first time all night, I didn't feel like a spy in my own life. Maybe this party wasn't so terrible after all.
