Operation Papaya Protocol

dogspypapaya

Marcus's summer job at the tropical fruit market was supposed to be chill. Just him, some exotic produce, and enough savings to finally upgrade his phone before junior year. He hadn't counted on becoming an accidental spy.

Every Tuesday at 3:47 PM, SHE would walk in. Chloe, the girl who sat behind him in AP History, the one whose laugh sounded like wind chimes and whose Instagram stories he definitely did NOT refresh every five minutes like a total creep.

His golden retriever, Buster, accompanied him to work because his mom claimed the dog was "emotionally supportive." More like emotionally supportive of dropping tennis balls into papaya displays and creating absolute chaos.

"Dude, you're literally stalking her," his best friend Raj had said when Marcus described his Chloe-tracking schedule. "That's not romantic. That's unhinged behavior."

"It's not stalking! It's... strategic observation."

"You sound like a spy. A weird, fruit-market spy."

The papaya incident changed everything.

Chloe reached for a papaya. Buster, sensing an opportunity, bounded toward her like a furry missile. The papaya launched into the air. Time slowed down. Marcus dove. Chloe screamed. The papaya splatted against the ceiling in a spectacular explosion of orange and seeds.

Dead silence. Then Chloe started laughing. Not just a giggle—a full-on, snorting, can't-breathe laugh that made Marcus's chest feel weird and tight.

"Did your dog just commit fruit homicide?" she asked, wiping tears from her eyes.

"Buster has strong opinions about tropical produce," Marcus managed, his face burning. "I'm so sorry. I can pay for the papaya. And the ceiling. And your emotional damages."

Chloe grinnned. "Nah. But maybe you can make it up to me? I've been trying to work up the courage to talk to you all summer."

Wait. WHAT.

"You... what?" Marcus blinked. "You've been what?"

"Spying on your stand from the coffee shop across the street?" Chloe's face turned pink. "Only since I noticed you're actually pretty cute when you're not staring at your phone like it holds the secrets of the universe."

Raj was right. They were BOTH spies. Two awkward idiots playing 4D chess with mangoes and papayas while an innocent dog looked on like the true mastermind he was.

"So," Chloe said, sliding her phone across the counter toward him. "Your turn. Insta or Snapchat?"

Buster chose that moment to shake papaya chunks all over both of them.

Marcus started laughing. "Both. Definitely both."

Some operations end in disaster. This one ended with a date, a very confused dog, and maybe the best story he'd ever tell Raj.
