Operation Hair Disaster

Maya pressed her phone to her ear, heart racing like she'd just chugged three iced coffees. The bathroom mirror showed the disaster: her normally sleek curls were now basically a poodle explosion after that DIY dye job went wrong. She'd spent the morning frantically googling 'does biotin **vitamin** actually fix fried hair' while her mom's golden retriever, Barnaby, whined outside the door.

'You there?' Dakota's voice crackled through the speaker. 'Sophomore hallway, north end. Target is approaching.'

Maya grabbed her backpack. 'Copy that.' This was it - Operation Make Jason Notice Her Before Graduation ( ideally this week). She'd been low-key **spy**ing on Jason's routine for two weeks, memorizing his locker combination and his post-lunch bathroom schedule. Was it creepy? Maybe. Was she desperate? Absolutely.

She sprinted down the hall, dodging freshmen who walked like they had all day. Her hair bounced wildly - like, aggressively bouncing - but whatever. She spotted Dakota near the water fountain, doing a terrible job of pretending to text while actually scouting.

'He's heading to his locker,' Dakota mouthed.

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was trying to escape through her throat. She practiced her cool girl walk - shoulders back, casual smile, like she definitely hadn't just spent twenty minutes fixing her hair catastrophe with her mom's expensive leave-in conditioner.

Then she saw him.

Jason. Leaning against his locker. Laughing at something. With perfect hair. Like, annoyingly perfect. And there was Barnaby - her actual **dog** - somehow loose from the house, trotting down the school hallway like he owned the place.

'NO,' Maya hissed.

Barnaby made a beeline for Jason. Because obviously. Jason, being Jason, crouched down and started petting him. 'Hey buddy,' he said, all smiley and perfect. 'You lost?'

Maya wanted to die. She wanted to actually perish. Her hair was a disaster, her stalking mission had just been ruined by her own dog, and Jason was petting Barnaby like this was totally normal.

Then Jason looked up. Saw her standing there. Dakota froze. The hallway went quiet.

'Is this your **dog**?' Jason asked, still petting Barnaby like he hadn't just witnessed Maya's entire life falling apart.

'My... family's,' Maya managed. 'He's, uh, very friendly.'

'He's awesome.' Jason grinned. 'I've always wanted one. Your hair looks cool, by the way.'

Maya blinked. 'What?'

'The curls. It's like, wild but in a good way.' Jason stood up, still smiling. 'I'm Jason, by the way.'

'Maya.'

'Cool.' He handed her Barnaby's leash. 'See you around, Maya.'

She stood there holding the leash while Dakota practically vibrated with excitement. Maya touched her hair. Maybe the biotin vitamins were working their magic, or maybe the universe was just weird. But somehow, somehow, her worst hair day had turned into her best moment.
