Operation Hair Disaster
Maya's bedroom was a battlefield of disaster. An empty orange soda can sat precariously on her nightstand next to three half-used hair products. The bottle of neon orange dye promised 'fiery transformation' but looked more like radioactive waste.
"You look like a zombie that crawled out of a grave," her best friend Leo said, facetime-smirking from her phone screen. "But like, a cool zombie. Zombie chic. It's a vibe."
Maya groaned, running hands through her now-orange-streaked brown hair. The DIY dye job had gone sideways — literally. The left side was vibrant sunset, the right side... suspiciously unchanged. "This is it. My social life is over. Everyone's gonna think I'm trying too hard."
"You literally are," Leo said. "That's the point. That's what we do in eighth grade. We try too hard until we figure out who we actually are."
Then came the knock that changed everything.
"Maya?" A whisper from her window. Connor. The boy she'd been crushing on since September, standing on her roof like he was in a movie.
She froze. Her hair looked like a crime scene. Her room smelled like chemicals. Connor was outside her window at 11 PM on a Tuesday.
"What are you doing here?"
"I left my phone at your house earlier," he whispered. "Didn't want your parents to wake up. Can you pass it?"
"Um..." She spotted it on her desk, near the tangled cable charging mess. "Yeah, wait."
She leaned out the window, phone in hand, orange hair catching the moonlight like she'd styled it that way on purpose. Connor's eyes widened.
"Your hair," he said. "It's... different."
"Disaster different or cool different?"
"Cool different," he said, and the way he smiled made something flip in her stomach. "Honestly? It's kind of badass."
Later, when he was gone and Maya collapsed back onto her bed, Leo was still on FaceTime, laughing. "Okay, I saw everything. I'm basically your spy now. I have intel."
"What intel?"
"Connor thinks you're a badass," Leo said. "Also, I saw him looking at your hair like he was impressed. Not everyone can pull off accidental orange. You're starting something, Maya. A legacy."
Maya touched the orange streak, smiling. Maybe it wasn't a disaster after all. Maybe it was the beginning of figuring out exactly who she wanted to be.
