Operation Goldfish Whisper

My hair looked like a disaster. A chlorine-green, DIY bleach job that screamed 'I have zero chill and even less impulse control.' I stared at my reflection, feeling like a certified zombie after staying up until 3 AM scrolling through Kai's Instagram Stories. Again.

'You're being creepy, even for you,' I told my reflection. Then I turned to Mr. Bubbles. My goldfish floated in his bowl, judging me with those unblinking eyes.

'At least someone understands,' I sighed. Mr. Bubbles and I had been through it this semester — the breakup, the failed geometry quiz, the time I accidentally wore my slippers to school.

The hallway buzzed with pre-weekend energy. Lockers slammed. People shouted. I kept my head down, hoping my hoodie would obscure the hair situation.

'Psst. Maya.'

I froze. It was Riley, leaning against her locker like she owned the place. Her curls were perfect, obviously.

'Love the hair,' she said. 'Very... intentional chaos.'

I blinked. 'That's definitely a way to describe it.'

'So,' Riley lowered her voice. 'I need your help.'

'Me? Why?'

'You notice things.' She pulled out her phone. 'Kai keeps posting these weird cryptic messages. I think someone's messing with him. I need to figure out who.'

My heart did this thing where it forgot how to rhythm. 'You want me to... what?'

'Be a spy.' She grinned. 'You're already low-key observing everything anyway. I've seen you in the cafeteria. You notice the stuff nobody else catches.'

I felt seen. Actually seen. Not just 'that quiet girl in the back' but someone with skills.

'So?'

'I'm in,' I heard myself say.

Mr. Bubbles would be proud. My social life had officially gone from 'nonexistent' to 'actual spy mission.' And my hair? Still green, but suddenly it felt like part of the look.

Operation: Find Kai's Troll was officially a go. Finally, being the observant one wasn't weird — it was strategic.
