Operation Goldfish

Maya's bedroom had become command central. Her three beta fish — technically a **goldfish** rescue situation, whatever — stared at her from their tank as she adjusted her hair for the hundredth time. The first house party of freshman year loomed in two hours, and Maya was internally screaming.

"You're being dramatic," said Kai, sprawled across her bed, absentmindedly petting Maya's **cat**, Luna, who looked judgy as hell. "Just show up, vibe, dip at 10. Classic introvert move."

"Easy for you to say," Maya groosed. "You're not out here overthinking everything like some kind of socially awkward **zombie**."

Kai laughed. "Girl, you've been watching me pretend to be a functional human all week. We're ALL zombies surviving on caffeine and collective delusion."

Fair. Kai had a point.

The real problem wasn't the party itself. It was Jake — the beautiful, confident, volleyball-playing junior who'd somehow ended up in her Spanish class. Maya had been lowkey **spy**-ing on his Instagram stories like a total creep, analyzing his music taste and coffee orders for weeks. Pathetic? Absolutely. But her therapist said baby steps.

"Okay, new plan," Kai announced, sitting up dramatically. "We're not overthinking. We're **running** a mission. Operation: Don't Be Weird. Straightforward, achievable goals."

Maya blinked. "That's literally the worst advice ever."

"IT'S WORKING IN MY HEAD." Kai grabbed Luna as the cat attempted to escape. "Look, you're Maya. You're funny, you're genuine, you draw cool stuff in the margins of your notebook. Jake either vibes with that or he doesn't. And if he doesn't? That's a 'him' problem, not a 'you' problem."

The party was everything Maya feared: too loud, too many people, way too much Axe body spray. Jake was there, laughing with his friends, and Maya felt like she was underwater. But then Kai nudged her, hard.

"Go," they whispered. "Operation Don't Be Weird. GO."

So Maya walked over. Not confident, exactly, but determined. She said something sort of funny about the terrible punch. Jake laughed. They talked about music and teachers and how weird high school was, and for the first time all night, Maya wasn't thinking about being cool. She was just... talking.

Later, walking home with Kai at 11:47, Maya's phone buzzed.

**Jake:** hey, cool meeting you tonight. my friend is having people over saturday if you wanna come?

Maya stopped **running** scenarios in her head and just smiled.

**Maya:** yeah. text me the details.

Sometimes the best operations aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're just showing up, being yourself, and seeing what happens. Maya texted Jake back, and Luna the cat waited by the door like she'd known all along. She probably had.
