Operation: Goldfish

Maya pressed her forehead against her locker, eyes narrowed like she was on a classified mission. Technically grabbing her chemistry textbook, really she was spying – three intense minutes of observing Caleb's new Jordans, Chloe's fluttery eyelashes, and whether Tyler had finally noticed the way Maya always "accidentally" took the long way to class.

He hadn't. Obviously.

At home, Finbar swam in lazy circles, his orange scales catching the afternoon light. He was her goldfish, her confidant, the only living thing that didn't make Maya feel like she was constantly saying the wrong thing. "Another failed mission," she told him, dropping fish food into his bowl. Fin surfaced, gulped, and returned to his meditation, unimpressed.

Whatever. Maya swallowed the neon-orange vitamin her mom had left on the counter – MULTIVITAMIN PLUS, FOCUS AND ENERGY. Like a tiny pill could fix how her voice cracked when she got nervous, or how she spent every lunch pretending to be absorbed in her phone while secretly watching the popular table from behind her hair.

But the vitamins were working. Or at least Maya felt more awake, sharper. She noticed things: Tyler checking his phone every seven minutes. Chloe's North Face backpack with a tiny astronaut keychain. Caleb's left shoe, perpetually untied.

Then Tyler looked at her. Actually looked.

"Nice shirt," he said. MAYA'S SHIRT – vintage band tee she'd thrifted, the kind of cool thing she'd been too scared to wear until the vitamins made her feel invincible.

"Thanks," she managed, voice steady.

By Friday, Maya sat two tables from the popular group, close enough to hear conversations but far enough to remain undetected. Like a spy who belonged. She'd even made eye contact with Chloe, who'd nodded like they shared some secret understanding.

The breakthrough came during lunch. Chloe slid into the seat across from her.

"You're always watching us," Chloe said, not mean. Just observant.

Maya froze. "I'm not—"

"It's cool," Chloe smiled, spinning her astronaut keychain. "Your fish. Finbar. What kind is he?"

Maya blinked. "How did you—"

"I sit behind you in bio. You talk to him. Actual conversations. It's honestly kind of sweet. Most people here are terrified of being seen caring about anything."

Something shifted inside Maya's chest, warm and terrifying. Like she'd finally let herself believe the vitamins were actually working.

"He's a comet goldfish," Maya found herself saying. "He hates when I tap on the glass. I think he judges me."

Chloe laughed, head tilted back, eyelashes fluttering. "Judgmental fish are the best kind." She pulled a small foil square from her pocket. "Vitamin C. Want one? My mom says school lunches are nutritional disasters."

Maya took it, their fingers brushing. "Thanks."

"Hey," Chloe said, standing. "We're going to the aquarium this weekend – jellyfish that glow in the dark. You should come."

That night, Maya sat by Finbar's bowl. "I think I made a friend," she whispered. "Like, a real one. Not a mission."

Finbar surfaced, gulped, and returned to his meditation – maybe a little faster this time. The vitamins sat on her nightstand. Maya didn't take one.

She didn't have to.
