Operation Goldfish

Maya's phone screen glowed in her dark room at 11:47 PM, illuminating her most pressing mission: Operation Crush Surveillance. For three weeks, she'd been low-key spying on Jordan's Instagram stories, watching his life through carefully filtered windows like a total creep, but a ROMANTIC creep. That distinction mattered.

Her orange cat, Barnaby, chose that exact moment to channel his inner agent, leaping onto her desk with the grace of a ninja and the coordination of a disaster. He knocked her phone off the bed—crash—and then stared at her with zero remorse, basically living his best life while hers imploded.

"You're actually the worst," Maya whispered, retrieving her now-cracked phone. The notification light blinked. Jordan had messaged her. HER. Jordan, who had somehow noticed she existed despite her being approximately as visible as a transparent goldfish in a crowded pond.

"Saw you liked my story from 3 weeks ago deep in my archives lol," the message read. "That's dedication."

Maya's face burned. Her supposed stealth operation had been compromised. She was about to type something smooth, something cool, something that said "yeah, I'm chill" not "I'm obsessed with you," when Barnaby knocked over the small fishbowl on her nightstand.

Her literal goldfish, Goldie Hawn, flopped onto the carpet, genuinely living up to her namesake's dramatic energy.

"NO!" Maya dove, scooping Goldie into her water glass, her phone forgotten, her dignity abandoned, her crush life effectively over before it began. She'd be known as Fish Murderer Girl, and she'd deserve it.

Her phone buzzed again. "Everything good over there?"

Maya stared at her reflection in the fishbowl—hair frizzy, eyes wide, cat judging her from the bookshelf. She typed back: "My cat tried to assassinate my fish. It's a whole situation."

The typing bubble appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.

"Sounds dramatic. I respect the chaos. Want to tell me about it tomorrow? At lunch?"

Barnaby purred. Goldie swam in her temporary glass penthouse. Maya smiled, her spy career ending not with a bang, but with a fish-related fiasco that somehow, miraculously, led to something real.
