Operation Chlorine Dreams
Maya's curls had staged a rebellion overnight. She stared at her reflection, pointing at the disaster. This hair situation had "stay home and cry" written all over it, but Chloe's pool party was today, and everyone who was anyone would be there. Including Jason.
"You're literally overthinking it," her little brother Leo said from the doorway, clutching his toy binoculars. "I've been spying on the neighbors all morning and nobody looks perfect."
Maya rolled her eyes. Leo's spy phase was getting weird. "That's different. You're six. I'm fifteen and my hair looks like I stuck a fork in an electrical socket."
At the party, the smell of chlorine hit her like a wall. Swimming was supposed to be fun, except Maya could barely doggy paddle without inhaling half the pool. She grabbed a paper plate, loading it with snacks to look busy—anything to avoid the water where Jason was currently doing laps that showed off way too much muscle for someone their age.
Chloe appeared beside her, eyes wide. "Maya. Oh my god. Jason is literally staring at you right now."
Maya froze. "What?"
"He keeps looking over here. I think he's trying to make eye contact! This is it!"
Her heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. She smoothed her curls, conscious for the first time all day that maybe her hair wasn't a total disaster. Maybe the chlorine humidity had actually helped. She turned slowly, ready to finally have her moment.
Jason's head popped up from the water. He waved.
Maya smiled back, cool and confident, ready to finally talk to him.
"HEY!" he called across the pool. "You have something in your teeth!"
Maya's stomach dropped.
"IT'S BIG!" Jason added helpfully. "Looks like spinach or something!"
The laughter started with Chloe's little cousin and spread like contagion. Maya's face burned. She'd been standing there smiling like an idiot with a giant piece of spinach in her teeth, thinking Jason was actually interested.
She ran to the bathroom, locked herself in a stall, and let the tears come. Stupid. So stupid.
Until her phone buzzed.
Unknown number: Hey, this is Jason. Chloe gave me your number. Felt super bad about earlier—didn't mean to embarrass you. Actually wanted to say your hair looks really cool today. Different. In a good way.
Maya stared at the screen, laughter bubbling up through her embarrassment.
Leo was right. Nobody looked perfect. And maybe that was the point.
