Oliver's Secret Swimming Friend
Oliver loved to swim. Every summer day, he would slip into the cool blue water of Silver Lake, paddling and diving until his fingers turned wrinkly like raisins. His older brother called him a little fish, but Oliver felt more like a mermaid—curious and full of wonder.
One afternoon, while practicing his underwater swimming, Oliver noticed something strange. Tiny bubbles rose from the deep end of the lake, popping softly at the surface. Being a curious boy, he decided to spy on whatever was making those mysterious bubbles.
He floated quietly, holding his breath, watching through his goggles. Suddenly, a splash of rainbow color darted beneath him! Oliver blinked—was that a fish? Fish weren't rainbow-colored, and they certainly didn't wear tiny shells like hats.
The next day, Oliver returned to the lake with extra bread crumbs, hoping to make friends with whatever lived below. He swam patiently, waiting. Just as he was about to give up, something tickled his toes!
"Hello!" a bubbly voice chimed.
Oliver jumped—and accidentally did a cannonball right on top of a tiny creature with shimmering scales and wings like a dragonfly. "I'm so sorry!" he cried.
The creature laughed, sounding like wind chimes. "I'm Splash! I'm a water sprite, and I've been waiting for someone to notice me. You're the best spy I've ever seen!"
That summer, Oliver and Splash became the best of friends. They played tag among the lily pads, had underwater tea parties, and Splash taught Oliver how to hold his breath for an entire minute. Oliver learned that the best discoveries come not from spying, but from making friends with the unexpected.
"Everyone has magic inside them," Splash told him one golden evening. "You just have to dive deep enough to find it."
When summer ended, Oliver had to say goodbye to his magical friend. But every time he returned to Silver Lake, he would dive into the cool water and know that true friendship, like magic, never really disappears—it just waits patiently for you to return.
