Oliver's Midnight Mission
Oliver was no ordinary fox. His fur gleamed like burnished copper, and he lived in the hollow of an ancient oak tree at the edge of Mrs. Pennywhistle's garden. But Oliver had a secret—he was a garden spy!
Every night, when the moon rose like a glowing orange slice in the dark sky, Oliver would slip on his special spy glasses (made from two magnifying lenses tied with grass) and begin his patrol. The garden was different at night. Fireflies danced like tiny lanterns, and crickets sang mysterious songs.
One summer evening, Oliver heard splashing by the garden pond. Someone was swimming! He crept closer, his paws silent on the soft grass. There, bobbing in the moonlight, was a small orange kitten—Mittens, the neighbor's cat—paddling frantically in circles.
"I'm practicing!" Mittens called when she spotted Oliver. "I want to be the first cat who loves water!"
Oliver's spy notes had never recorded anything like this. But suddenly, Mittens began to sink. Her fur was soaked through, and she looked tired.
Without thinking, Oliver dove into the pond. Foxes weren't supposed to like water either, but his paws churned powerfully. He nudged Mittens toward the edge, and together they scrambled onto the grass, shaking water everywhere like two wet, giggling fluffballs.
"Thank you, Oliver," Mittens purred. "I guess being a swimming cat will take more practice."
"Or maybe," Oliver said wisely, adjusting his wet spy glasses, "some adventures are better with a friend."
From that night on, the garden spy had a partner. And sometimes, if you look carefully at Mrs. Pennywhistle's pond on moonlit nights, you might see an orange fox and an orange cat sitting side by side, their tails wrapped around each other, watching the fireflies dance—two unlikely friends who learned that the best adventures are the ones you share.
