No Lifeguard on Duty

dogpoolfriend

The neighborhood pool party was supposed to be Maya's social resurrection. After spending freshman year as the invisible girl, she'd finally gotten invited to Jake's legendary end-of-summer bash. But now she stood at the chain-link fence, clutching her towel like a shield, while her childhood best friend Priya stood across the pool, laughing with the popular crew like they'd been friends forever.

'Yo, you coming in or what?' Jake called, splashing water from his throne on the inflatable flamingo.

Maya's phone buzzed. A text from Priya: 'save me 🙄 these ppl r so fake.'

So that was the game. Two-faced, double-crossing, and Maya was suddenly the punching bag for Priya's social climbing.

Then she saw it: a scrawny stray dog trotting along the outside of the fence, looking like it hadn't eaten since Tuesday. Something in its hopeful, desperate eyes made Maya think of herself.

Without thinking, she unlatched the gate and the dog slipped through, heading straight toward the pool party chaos.

'What the—?' Jake's girlfriend screamed as the dog shook itself near the lounge chairs.

Maya rushed over. 'Sorry! He's mine!'

The dog looked at her like she was crazy but played along, sitting when she patted her thighs.

'You brought a dog?' Priya wrinkled her nose. 'That's actually so embarrassing.'

'Maybe,' Maya said, standing taller. 'But he's got better manners than half the people here.'

The unexpected comeback landed. Jake snorted. Someone else laughed. Suddenly, Maya wasn't the invisible girl anymore. She was the one who'd brought a dog to a pool party, bold and weird and unapologetic.

Later, sitting on the pool edge with her feet in the water while the dog napped nearby, Priya drifted over. 'That was actually kinda legendary, not gonna lie.'

Maya shrugged. 'Sometimes you gotta bring your own vibe.'

She'd came for validation, left with something better: the knowledge that the right friends—and the right four-legged co-conspirators—find you when you stop trying so hard.
