Maya's bedroom door flew open. Her little brother stood there grinning, holding the family cat like a furry trophy.
"Mr. Whiskers got into your room again!" Leo announced.
Maya bolted upright from where she'd been lying on her bed, doom-scrolling through her iPhone. Her heart stopped. On her vanity mirror, where she'd carefully arranged her outfit for tonight's party, sat the cat. And the cat sat on her brand new cream-colored beanie.
"No, no, NO!"
The hat—her lucky hat, the one that made her feel like herself—was now adorned with a distinct patch of orange fur. Maya's hands flew to her hair, which she'd spent forty minutes perfecting in loose waves. Now she could feel the frizz kicking in, thanks to the panic flooding her system.
"Leo, why didn't you close the door?!"
"You were supposed to be watching him!" Leo shot back, already retreating.
Maya grabbed her phone and opened the group chat. *Guys, I might be late. Emergency situation.*
Three dots appeared immediately from her best friend Jaz.
*Everything ok?*
Maya stared at her reflection. The hat was ruined. Her hair was already surrendering to humidity. And somewhere in this apartment, a cat was probably plotting his next victim.
But then she caught herself—really looked at her reflection. Since when did she need a hat to feel like herself? Since when did she need perfect waves to belong?
She thought about the endless filters she applied to her posts, the careful curation of her "spontaneous" photos, the way she adjusted her personality like she adjusted her hair.
The cat chose that moment to hop onto the vanity and head-butt her arm. Mr. Whiskers, agent of chaos, bearer of orange fur and inconvenient truths.
Maya laughed. She grabbed her phone and snapped a photo—real hair, real mess, real cat staring judgmentally at the ruined hat. No filter. No edit.
*Actually,* she typed into the group chat, *I'm bringing the cat.*
*WHAT?!* Jaz replied.
*Long story. See you in fifteen.*
Maya grabbed her keys. The hat could stay. The cat—well, the cat was coming along for the ride.
