Mustache Rides and Maybes
Maya tugged the brim of her dad's old Stetson lower, hoping it didn't scream "try-hard." At 15, everything already felt like walking through a minefield of potential embarrassment, and wearing a cowboy hat to the county fair while NOT being a ranch kid was高风险. But Chantel had insisted. "You need to LOOK like you belong, Maya. confidence is key, bestie."
The fairgrounds smelled like fried dough, livestock, and that specific teenage desperation to be seen. Maya's crush, Liam, was somewhere by the bull riding arena with his friends. She'd been planning this "casual run-in" for a week.
"You got this, Chantel said, checking her phone. "Just walk by all natural, maybe say something about the bulls."
"About the bulls?" Maya raised an eyebrow. "That's my line? 'Hey Liam, what's up with those bulls?'"
"It's conversation!" Chantel insisted. "Besides, his uncle owns that ranch. He'll think you're interested in his life or whatever."
Maya took a breath, adjusted her hat one more time, and headed toward the arena. Her heart did that stupid fluttery thing. She'd been crushing on Liam since seventh grade, when he'd let her borrow his pen after hers exploded during math class. Two years of smiling across hallways, liking his Instagram posts within 30 seconds of him posting, and still nothing.
The bull riding was about to start. Maya stood near the fence, trying to look casual, like she totally came here alone to watch grown men get thrown off angry animals and wasn't desperately scanning for a specific boy in a Carhartt jacket.
Then she saw him. Liam was laughing with his friends, still in his school baseball cap (why were boys so attached to their baseball caps?), looking annoyingly cute and relaxed. Maya's stomach dropped.
"Hey!" A voice beside her made her jump. It was Liam. Actually Liam. Standing there. "Maya, right? From Mr. Henderson's class?"
Her brain short-circuited. "Yeah! Yeah, that's me. Hi."
"Nice hat," he said, and she couldn't tell if he was being genuine or if this was what Chantel called "the polite sarcasm." "You ride?"
Maya's mind scrambled. Say something cool. Say something authentic. "Oh, no, I just thought it'd be funny to wear it cause we're at the fair and you know, bulls." She gestured vaguely at the arena. "Figured I'd lean into the aesthetic."
Liam laughed. Actually laughed. not politely chuckled. "You're wild. I like it."
A announcer's voice boomed over the speakers: "AND NEXT UP, BUCKLE UP FOR TANK, THE MEANEST BULL IN THREE COUNTIES!"
"This should be good," Liam said, moving closer to the fence. "Tank's legendary. Last week he threw this guy in three seconds. It was iconic."
Maya moved closer too, their shoulders barely not touching. The gate opened, and a massive bull exploded into the arena, twisting and kicking with terrifying power. The rider lasted maybe 1.5 seconds before getting launched.
"YIKES," Maya said, then immediately wanted to die.
But Liam was grinning. "Right? That's Tank for you. Hey, you should come over here by the gate, better view. My uncle's the one who raised Tank."
They moved to a spot with a clearer view, and for the next twenty minutes, Maya somehow ended up in a conversation that felt unexpectedly real. She asked about his uncle's ranch, he asked about her hat (she admitted it was her dad's and they shared a moment over awkward parent clothes), and when she made a joke about how all the bull riders seemed to have the same mustache, Liam laughed so hard he spit out his lemonade.
"You're literally sly as a fox with that one," he said, wiping his chin. "I mean, I've been thinking that for years and never said anything."
The bull riding ended. People started drifting away toward the carnival rides.
"Hey," Liam said, looking almost nervous. "Some of us are gonna grab food and maybe hit the rides. You want to come?"
Maya's heart did a full gymnastics routine. "Yeah. I'd like that."
"Cool." He smiled, and it reached his eyes this time. "Let me just tell my friends. Be right back."
As he walked away, Maya adjusted her hat and pulled out her phone to text Chantel: "THE BULL THING ACTUALLY WORKED. Also I might be going on carnival rides with Liam????"
Her phone buzzed back immediately: "MAYA I'M A GENIUS. Also: ride the Ferris wheel with him. FERRIS WHEEL. That's romantic AF."
Maya smiled, watching Liam wave at his friends across the arena. Maybe Chantel was right. Maybe confidence was key. Or maybe sometimes you just wore a ridiculous hat, made a terrible mustache joke, and somehow accidentally got exactly what you wanted.
Either way, she was definitely riding the Ferris wheel.
