Mittens and the Sphinx's Golden Secret
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Mittens practiced being a spy. She tiptoed through the garden, hid behind bushes, and watched everything with her bright green eyes. One evening, she heard a tiny splash.
"Help! Someone help!" cried a little voice.
Mittens crept toward the garden pond and discovered a small goldfish named Splash trapped in a shallow puddle. The pond was drying up!
"Don't worry," Mittens said, using her best spy voice. "I'll rescue you."
She carefully scooped Splash into a bucket and carried him through the magical mist that appeared at midnight. Suddenly, they stood before an enormous stone sphinx with golden wings.
"Welcome, little ones," said the sphinx in a voice like wind chimes. "I guard the Secret Spring. But first, you must solve my riddle."
Mittens puffed out her chest. Spies loved riddles!
"I have fins but cannot swim," the sphinx began. "I have whiskers but cannot meow. What am I?"
Mittens thought hard. She looked at Splash in the bucket. "A goldfish!"
"Correct," said the sphinx, smiling. "You used both your eyes and your heart. That is the greatest secret of all."
The sphinx spread her golden wings, and a beautiful spring bubbled up from the ground—perfect for Splash!
"Thank you, Mittens!" Splash chirped, swimming happily.
Mittens realized something wonderful: being a spy wasn't just about watching and hiding. The best adventures happened when you helped friends. And that was the greatest secret of all.
