Midnight Social Media Spy

Maya clicked to the next Instagram story, illuminated by her phone screen at 2:47 AM. She'd become a master at this—spying on her classmates' lives while they slept, piecing together the social hierarchy she couldn't navigate during the day. Her eyes burned like she'd been rubbing sand in them, her brain foggy and half-dead from three nights of staying up way too late. Zombie mode: fully activated.

"You look like garbage," her brother Kaden observed the next morning, flopping onto the kitchen counter beside her. "No offense." He slid a gummy vitamin across the granite. "Take this. It won't fix whatever you're doing to yourself, but it's a start."

Maya rolled her eyes but pocketed the vitamin. The real problem wasn't sleep—it was the information. Connor from pre-calc had posted a TikTok with Lila from lacrosse at midnight. Her former best friend Priya had liked it. The social landscape was shifting beneath her feet like tectonic plates, and she was the only one monitoring the seismic activity.

"You gotta bear in mind that people post their highlight reel, not their behind-the-scenes," Kaden said, reading her encrypted mood over his cereal. "You're doing detective work on a reality that's half filtered."

That hit weirdly close to home. Maya thought about her own posts—the curated smiles, the aesthetic angles, the timestamps strategically placed to look spontaneous. She was both the spy and the subject.

At lunch, she watched Connor and Lila laughing across the cafeteria. They looked normal, human, flawed. Lila's hair was frizzy from humidity. Connor spilled ketchup on his shirt. They weren't the mythological creatures she'd constructed from pixels and overnight data collection. Just awkward teenagers trying to figure it out, same as her.

Maya pulled the gummy vitamin from her pocket and chewed it slowly. It tasted like artificial grape and second chances. She opened Instagram, scrolled to Connor's post, and finally commented something real: "That TikTok was actually funny lol."

Ten minutes later, he replied: "Haha thanks! We were so out of it, staying up late is catching up with me."

She wasn't just watching anymore. She was participating. The spy was coming in from the cold.
