Midnight Orange Escape
Maya's phone buzzed with another text from the party group chat. *U coming? Everyone's here.* She stared at her reflection—hair perfectly curled, outfit planned for three days—and felt nothing but the familiar knot in her stomach. Being the new girl at Maplewood High meant performing. Every smile measured, every laugh timed.
Her cat, Biscuit, wound around her legs, sensing her hesitation. "You're lucky," Maya muttered, scratching behind his ears. "Nobody expects you to be cool."
She grabbed an orange from the kitchen counter, peeling it in messy strips, letting the citrus spray hit her wrists. Her dad's voice echoed from last week: *Real friendship isn't about showing up, Maya. It's about showing up as yourself.* But what if herself wasn't enough?
Then she saw it—Liam's light turn on across the street. The same Liam who'd sat with her at lunch when nobody else would. Who'd asked about her sketchbook while everyone talked about TikTok trends.
Before she could overthink it, Maya grabbed her sneakers and started running. Out the back door, past the gate, sneakers slapping against pavement under orange streetlights. The air was crisp, September-cool, filled with the distant sound of music from three blocks away.
Liam was already on his front porch, holding something that glowed in the darkness. A plastic cup filled with water.
"I knew you'd skip," he said, no judgment. Just... knowing.
"How?"
"Because you're actual, not fake." He pointed to the cup. "Water balloon arsenal. Jake said he's skipping too. We're starting our own thing."
Maya's chest loosened. "What kind of thing?"
"The kind where we can be weird and nobody cares." Liam smiled. "Biscuit escaped again, by the way. He's probably waiting by your window."
Maya laughed, really laughed, the kind that doesn't get measured. The orange she'd peeled sat on the porch railing behind her. The party music thumped in the distance, irrelevant.
"I'm in," she said. "But first—we rescue the cat."
Some friends you find in the chaos. Others find you when you finally stop running.
