Midnight Orange

Maya felt like a zombie, finals week having chewed her up and spit her out with the efficiency of a recycling plant. Three AM stared back from her iPhone, mocking her with its harsh brightness as she scrolled through everyone else's seemingly perfect lives.

That's when she saw it through her bedroom window—an orange glow pulsing from the woods behind her subdivision. Not the warm orange of sunset, but something electric, something impossible.

Her phone buzzed. Another notification she'd ignore.

She grabbed her hoodie—orange, her mom's color, the one she'd inherited after the funeral—and slipped out the window. The air smelled like rain and possibility. Maya hadn't snuck out since freshman year, hadn't felt that specific kind of alive since before everything changed.

The woods swallowed her. Deeper, deeper, until the orange glow revealed itself: not a UFO, not a ghost, but a fox. Its fur burned with that impossible light, and for a moment, Maya wondered if she really had become a zombie, hallucinating magic animals in the Connecticut suburbs.

The fox stared at her with eyes that knew everything, like it had witnessed every midnight escape, every secret, every heartbreak in this town.

"You're not real," Maya whispered, but the fox just tilted its head, almost smiling.

Then she understood: the orange came from behind the fox. A campfire. Someone else was out here, someone who'd created this moment of impossible beauty.

The fox dissolved into shadow, and Maya found herself standing before a circle of seniors she'd seen but never spoken to. They passed her a guitar, a bag of marshmallows, an invitation she didn't know she needed until it appeared.

"Zombie mode ends now," someone said, and Maya laughed—really laughed—for the first time in months.

Later, she'd wonder if the fox had ever existed at all. But that didn't matter. What mattered was the orange fire, the music, the feeling of being seen, of becoming someone else entirely.

Her iPhone stayed dark until dawn.
