Midnight Court Sessions
The lightning flashed across the sky as I dragged myself to the padel court at 11 PM. My friend Chloe had insisted on this midnight practice session, saying it would help me get out of my head after what happened with Jake at lunch. I felt like a zombie — exhausted, emotionally drained, and honestly wondering why I'd agreed to this.
My golden retriever Max bounded ahead of me, his leash tangled around my wrist. He was technically supposed to be at home, but Mom was working late and I couldn't leave him alone after he'd eaten an entire bag of spinach from the grocery counter earlier. The green evidence was still smeared across his muzzle.
"You're overthinking it," Chloe said as we set up on the court. She was right — I'd been obsessing over Jake's text all day. The one that said 'maybe' to hanging out this weekend. What does that even mean?
Max started chasing the padel ball across the court, barking at every bounce. We both laughed, the tension finally breaking.
"Spinach breath," I said, scratching behind his ears. "You're literally the worst.
Another lightning strike illuminated Chloe's grinning face in the darkness. "See? This is better than sitting in your room spiraling about Jake. This is living."
She wasn't wrong. The storm was moving closer, rain starting to spit down around us, but neither of us moved to leave. Max collapsed on the sideline, completely worn out from his impromptu game.
"I think 'maybe' is fine," Chloe said suddenly, reading my mind like she always did. "It's not a no. It's not playing games. It's just... maybe. And that's okay."
I looked at her, then at Max happily chewing on a padel racket cover, then at the sky lighting up again. Something shifted inside me. Maybe I didn't need everything figured out right now. Maybe I could just be here, in this moment, with my best friend and my disaster dog, playing padel in a storm.
"Yeah," I said, swinging my racket. "Maybe is okay."
We played until we were soaked, until Max was practically asleep standing up, until my phone buzzed in my pocket with a new message from Jake. But I didn't check it. Not yet. Some things could wait.
