Midnight at the Padel Court

Elena adjusted the orange headband, her fingers trembling. The corporate padel tournament had been Marcus's idea—team building, he'd called it. But she knew better. She was the spy their competitors had planted three years ago, and tonight was the night she'd finally extract the encryption keys from his phone.

The court echoed with the rhythmic thwack of balls against glass walls. Marcus served, his shirt already damp with sweat. Elena's golden retriever, Barnaby, watched from the sidelines, tail thumping against the chain-link fence.

"Your form's off," Marcus said, moving closer. "Everything okay?"

Elena hesitated. In three years of stolen documents and copied drives, she'd never once questioned what she was doing. Until him. Until Marcus had started bringing her morning coffee with that stupid spinach quiche from the bakery downstairs.

"I have spinach in my teeth, don't I?" she asked suddenly.

Marcus laughed, and something in her chest cracked. "No. You're perfect."

He stepped closer, and for the first time, Elena noticed the tiny orange fleck in his hazel eyes. The dog barked, sharp and insistent, breaking the moment. Marcus's phone buzzed on the bench—her window, her mission, her entire career

as a corporate spy.

Instead, she stepped back.

"What's wrong?" Marcus asked.

"Nothing," Elena said, and for the first time in three years, it wasn't a lie. "I'm just happy to be here. With you."

She'd report failure to her handlers. She'd lose the contract, the bonus, her reputation. But as Barnaby trotted onto the court, nosing at her ankle, Elena realized some things weren't for sale. Not even for three million dollars.
