Maya and the Friendly Zombie's Magic Game
Maya found the zombie behind the old oak tree, but he wasn't scary at all. He had green skin and messy hair, but his eyes were kind and sparkled like morning dew.
"I'm Zom," he said shyly. "I'm not a real zombie. I'm just magical."
Maya, being the adventurous girl who talked to squirrels and made friends with clouds, wasn't afraid. "What are you doing back here?"
Zom held up the most beautiful racquet Maya had ever seen. It was bright orange, like sunset captured in wood and string. "This is my magic padel racquet," he explained. "But I can't play alone."
"I'll play with you!" Maya said. "But where's the ball?"
Zom smiled, and when he did, little orange butterflies danced around his head. "Watch."
He swung the orange racquet, and a glowing ball appeared out of thin air. When Zom hit it, the ball left trails of rainbow light. When Maya hit it back with her ordinary racquet, flowers bloomed wherever the ball landed.
They played until the stars came out, and the whole neighborhood transformed. Grey sidewalks became purple crystal paths. Empty lots turned into strawberry gardens. Even grumpy Mr. Henderson's fence grew morning glories that sang soft lullabies.
"The magic only works when friends play together," Zom said. "That's why I needed you."
From that day on, Maya and Zom played padel every afternoon. The zombie who wasn't really a zombie became her best friend. And whenever someone in town was feeling sad, Maya and Zom would bring their orange racquet and play until the magic made everything better.
Sometimes, Maya discovered, the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most wonderful friends — especially when they're holding something orange and magical, and they just need someone to play with.
