Max and the Lightning Bug
Max pressed his nose against the window, watching the summer storm paint the sky with streaks of lightning. Each flash made his bedroom dance with shadows.
Something small flickered outside—tiny sparkles near the old cable that stretched from the telephone pole to his building.
Max opened the window carefully. A lightning bug hovered there, but its glow was barely visible, like a flashlight with dying batteries.
"You're not very bright," Max whispered.
The lightning bug landed on his windowsill, and Max could hear a tiny voice. "I need help. The storm lightning always gave us our glow, but tonight I'm too slow. The other lightning bugs flew ahead to catch the bolts, and I got left behind."
Max's eyes widened. "You eat lightning?"
"Not eat! We absorb its energy. It's like a vitamin for our glow. Without it, we can't shine."
The little lightning bug looked so sad. Max remembered how his mother made him take his vitamins every morning so he'd grow strong and healthy. This lightning bug needed its special vitamins too.
"Wait!" Max ran to his desk and grabbed his favorite flashlight—the one his grandpa had given him. "I have an idea."
He noticed the cable running outside his window. It was connected to the building's electrical system, and the storm had made it hum with extra energy.
"Can you follow this cable to the roof?" Max asked. "The lightning strikes up there are strong. I'll shine my flashlight to guide you."
The lightning bug's glow brightened just a little. "You'd help me?"
"Friends help each other," Max said simply.
For the next hour, Max stood by his window, flashlight steady as a star. He watched his tiny friend climb up the cable, moving closer and closer to the roof where the lightning flashed brightest.
Suddenly—CRACK! A bolt struck nearby. Max's little lightning bug absorbed the glow, then zipped back down the cable, now shining brilliant yellow-green, brighter than Max had ever seen.
"Thank you, Max!" the tiny voice called out. "You were right—friendship is the best vitamin of all!"
Max watched his new friend fly off to join the other lightning bugs, now glowing just as beautifully as the rest. He fell asleep with the window open, dreaming of lightning and friendship, and the magic that happens when you help someone shine.
