Max and the Baseball Zombie's Secret

swimmingbaseballzombie

Max loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and favorite ball—the one with the shiny blue autograph from his favorite player—and run to the park. One sunny afternoon, Max swung his bat with all his might. WHOOSH! The ball sailed high, high, higher... and SPLASH! Right into the deep end of the swimming pool.

Max couldn't believe it! He rushed to the pool's edge, peering into the sparkling water. But the ball had sunk to the very bottom. Taking a deep breath, Max jumped in, swimming deeper than he ever had before. The water was cool and magical, swirling with tiny silver bubbles.

Suddenly, something green and bumpy appeared at the bottom of the pool. A zombie! But not a scary zombie—this one was wearing a faded baseball cap and holding Max's missing ball. The zombie's big friendly eyes sparkled like underwater stars.

'Hi,' the zombie burbled. 'I'm Zed! I found your baseball.' Zed's voice bubbled up like laughter. 'I used to play baseball too, before I became a pool guardian.' Max's fear melted away. 'You know baseball?' Zed nodded enthusiastically. 'I was the best pitcher in my league!'

For the next hour, they played the most magical game of baseball ever—right there underwater! Zed taught Max special tricks: how to make the ball curve like a fish, how to pitch super slowly like a turtle, and how to catch with your feet like a crab. They laughed and splashed, the ball dancing through the water like a silver fish.

'Thank you, Zed!' Max said when it was time to go. 'You're not scary at all. You're the best friend I've made all summer!' Zed smiled, his green cheeks turning pink. 'And you're brave, Max. Most kids would have run away. But you stayed, and now we're friends.' Max climbed out of the pool, his glove in hand and heart full of wonder. Sometimes, he learned, the scariest-looking things just need a friend to show their true colors.

Every day that summer, Max returned for swimming and baseball with Zed. And Max discovered that the best adventures happen when you're brave enough to make friends with the unexpected.
