Mascot Duty and Mixed Signals

Maya stared at her phone, thumb hovering over Kai's text thread. Last read: Tuesday. It was Friday now.

"You okay?" Jordan asked, flopping onto the locker room bench beside her. "You've been scrolling for like, five minutes straight. That's not healthy."

"Just thinking about Kai." Maya locked her phone and shoved it in her backpack. "Ever since they started sitting with the popular crowd at lunch, it's like I don't exist. They said we'd still be friends, but..." She shrugged. "I haven't felt very friend-ed lately."

Jordan cracked open their protein shake. "Drama. High noon energy. You want me to talk to them?"

"No. That would make it worse." Maya stood up and grabbed the fox mascot head from her locker. "I have to be the stupid mascot at the game tonight anyway. This is fine. Everything's fine."

"You're literally doing community service as the school fox." Jordan grinned. "Embrace the cringe."

The gym was already packed when Maya squeezed into the fox costume. The head smelled like five years of teenage sweat and desperation. Great. Exactly her vibe.

She started doing the fox dance—stupid hip thrusts, arm waves—when she saw Kai in the front row, laughing with those new friends. They didn't even look at the fox.

Whatever.

Maya spun around and body-checked into the cheerleading pyramid accidentally. Coach Peterson came running over. "Fox! You need to switch out. We're gonna use the backup costume for halftime."

"Backup costume?"

"The dog." Coach tossed her a different mascot head. "School's building a new identity. Change, now."

Maya scrambled to swap heads in the equipment room. Her fox arms were clumsy, and she nearly tripped getting the dog head on. When she lumbered back out, the crowd went wild.

"GO DOG GO!" someone screamed.

Then she saw Kai. They were staring right at her, and for the first time in weeks, they actually smiled. Not a fake polite smile—a real one.

After the game, Maya found herself near the side exit, still wearing the dog head. Kai appeared.

"Hey," Kai said quietly. "Nice transition from fox to dog. Very... adaptable."

Maya lifted the dog head. "Kai, are we okay? Because you've been ghosting me all week and I—"

"I know." Kai looked at their shoes. "Those new people are exhausting. I was trying to fit in, but honestly? I'd rather hang with the person who's willing to be both the fox AND the dog in the same night." They looked up. "That's kind of iconic, honestly."

Maya felt something loosen in her chest. "So... friends again?"

"Always." Kai smiled. "Wanna get boba? You can tell me about what it's like inside those costumes."

"Deal," Maya said. "But first, help me get this dog head off. I can't feel my ears."
