Mascot Courage
The bear suit smelled like three years of teenage boys' sweat and cheap fabric deodorizer. Maya zipped it up, her face pressing against the scratchy mesh. Being mascot wasn't exactly the social peak she'd envisioned for freshman year.
Outside, the baseball game was underway. The whole school was there—Tyler in his varsity jacket, Chloe and her minions taking selfies in the stands. Maya spotted them from the sideline. Perfect.
"BEAR DOWN!" she bellowed through the mesh, stomping onto the field in the oversized costume. The crowd roared, but she couldn't tell if they were cheering or laughing. Probably both.
Her job: hype up the fans during the seventh inning stretch. Simple enough, until her sweaty paw slipped on a discarded Gatorade bottle. She went down hard, sliding across the dirt like a clumsy piñata. The mascot head twisted sideways.
The entire baseball team stopped mid-game. Tyler was staring. Chloe was definitely filming this for her TikTok.
Then something weird happened. The other team's mascot—a bull in an even worse costume—shuffled over and extended a hoof. The bull inside was probably suffering just as much.
She took it. They both stood up, and the crowd went wild.
"THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" the announcer screamed over the PA. "MASCOT SOLIDARITY!"
After the game, Tyler actually waited for her. The costume head was tucked under her arm, her hair sticking up everywhere.
"That was kind of legendary," he said. "No joke."
"Yeah, well," Maya shrugged, wiping sweat from her forehead. "Someone had to embrace the cringe."
"Want to get food? The team's going to—"
"Say no more," she cut in, grinning. "But I'm changing first. This bear has retired for the night."
Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that actually matter. Who knew?
Maya tossed the mascot head into her locker. Tomorrow she'd be just another freshman again. But tonight? Tonight she was the girl who owned it.
