Market Forces

The cable guy arrived at 8 AM, the earliest Elena had been awake in weeks. Since the hedge fund collapsed—since Marcus left with his bull market optimism and his sleek leather suitcase—she'd been sleeping past noon, drowning in the bear market of her own life.

"Ma'am, your connection's been down since the storm," the technician said, his voice flat. Elena watched him work, thinking about how Marcus always insisted on the premium package. Two hundred channels of nothing they never watched.

The cat, Bast, wound around Elena's legs. Marcus's cat, technically, though he'd left her behind with everything else. She'd stopped eating after he left, just like Elena had. Now she'd regained the weight, her fur glossy again. Sometimes resilience looked exactly like indifference.

"You have a pool," the cable guy noted, peering through the sliding doors.

"Yes."

"My kids'd love that. Swimming every day in summer."

Elena hadn't used it since before the collapse. Now it was just a dark mirror collecting leaves. Marcus had bought the house for the pool, for the illusion of leisure they'd both been too busy to enjoy. The bull market years had felt like swimming—weightless, effortless movement through a world that wanted you to float.

Then came the crash.

"All set," the technician said. "That'll be sixty-five for the service call."

Elena signed the receipt. After he left, she stood at the back door, watching light skim across the water. Something shifted in her chest—not hope exactly, but something like it. She stripped down to her skin and dove in.

The water shocked her lungs. She surfaced gasping, heart hammering, alive in a way she hadn't been in months. Bast sat on the patio watching, unconcerned. Above, the cable sagged between poles, carrying signals she no longer needed.

Elena swam again, cutting through the water, each stroke a rejection of the Bull, the Bear, all the animals that had once defined her worth. Just her, the water, and a morning that felt like beginning again.
