Market Animals

Elena sat in the corner of the dimly lit bar, nursing her third gin and tonic. The bear market had chewed through everyone's portfolios that quarter, but she'd made a killing. Nobody asked how. She'd been careful—careful like a fox, her handler used to say. That was before everything went wrong.

"You're becoming quite the bull, aren't you?" Marcus slid onto the stool beside her, his expensive cologne competing with the smell of stale beer. He was the senior analyst at the rival firm, the man she'd been secretly sleeping with for three months. The man she'd been feeding information to.

She'd started as a corporate spy on behalf of a hedge fund, infiltrating competitors' ranks. Marcus had been her target. Then he'd become something else. Now the lines had blurred beyond recognition.

"I did what I had to do," she said, not meeting his eyes. The bartender placed fresh drinks before them. Marcus's hand found hers under the bar—warm, calloused, terrifying.

"The SEC is asking questions, Elena. About the options trades. About your relationship with—"

She pulled away. "There's no relationship."

"Isn't there?" His voice cracked. "Because I thought there was. I thought—"

"You thought what?" The alcohol made her bold. "That the fox would stop being a fox? That the spy would fall in love and forget everything?"

He went still. "You said it yourself."

She stared at him—at the man she'd compromised professionally, the man she'd maybe fallen for, the man whose career she'd potentially destroyed. The bear market would end eventually. Markets always recovered. But some things didn't.

"The fund wants me to burn you, Marcus. Tomorrow's article will expose your insider trading. My insider trading, using your account."

He didn't look surprised. Just sad. "So the fox eats the bear after all."

"There are no bulls or bears in this game," she whispered, finishing her drink. "Just survivors."

She left him there with the bill and the truth and watched from the taxi as the recession bled into the night, feeling nothing at all.
