Mango's Moonlit Swim
Mango was a small orange cat with very long fur. Everywhere she went, her hair got tangled in bushes, caught on branches, and tripped her paws. The other cats laughed. 'Look at Mango!' they'd call. 'She looks like a walking dustball!'
One warm summer night, Mango sat by the edge of Silver Pond, watching fireflies dance. Her fluffy tail drooped. 'I wish my hair wasn't so silly,' she sighed.
Suddenly, something splashed! A tiny silver fish popped up, gasping for air. A large rock had trapped him near the shore. 'Help!' cried the fish. 'I can't reach the deep water!'
Mango stretched her paw, but she couldn't reach. The fish was too far out. 'I can't swim,' she admitted sadly. 'Cats don't like water.'
'But you must!' cried the fish. 'The sun will dry me up soon!'
Mango's heart pounded. She looked at her long, tangly fur, the thing everyone made fun of. But then she remembered how her hair always caught everything—leaves, twigs, even once, a lost baby bird.
'I have an idea!'
Mango waded into the cool water. It wasn't scary at all—it felt like liquid moonlight! She began swimming, paddling with all four paws. Her long fur spread out around her like a furry orange raft, creating a gentle current that pushed the trapped fish toward the deeper, safer water.
'You're doing it!' cheered the fish. 'Your beautiful hair is helping me!'
Beautiful? Nobody had ever called her hair beautiful before!
Mango swam harder, her flowing fur guiding her new friend to safety. When the fish was finally free, he did a happy flip. 'Thank you, Mango! You're the bravest, most wonderful cat in the whole world!'
The other cats, watching from the shore, had never seen anything like it. Mango's usually messy fur floated around her like a glowing orange crown in the moonlight.
From that night on, Mango wasn't embarrassed of her hair anymore. She even started teaching other cats that swimming was fun—and that the things that make us different are often the things that make us special.
