Luna and the Lightning Sprite

catcablelightning

Luna was a curious black cat with bright yellow eyes, always exploring places she shouldn't. Behind her family's house, there was a thick black cable that hummed with a strange song during thunderstorms. Luna's owner Mrs. Higgins said it carried electricity to power their lights, but Luna knew better.

One rainy night, while thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, Luna crept outside to investigate the cable. Suddenly—CRACK! A bolt of lightning streaked down from the purple clouds and zapped right into the cable! The whole thing glowed blindingly bright.

Luna's fur stood straight up. But instead of running away, she crept closer.

Inside the cable, a tiny voice squeaked, "Ouch! That was quite a tumble!"

A shimmering spark popped out from the cable—no bigger than a firefly, but glowing with the same brilliant blue as lightning. It was a lightning sprite!

"I'm Zaps," said the little sprite, shaking himself. "I was racing my lightning friends through the clouds when I slipped and got caught in this thick wire. Now I'm stuck!"

Luna's heart went out to him. Being stuck away from home sounded terrible.

"Don't worry," Luna purred gently. "I'll help you."

Zaps looked at her with wide, glowing eyes. "But you're just a cat! What can you do?"

"Cats are very clever," Luna said mysteriously. She had an idea. "If you can gather enough lightning energy, and I can climb to the roof and pull the cable tight, you might be able to spring yourself back to the clouds!"

Working together, Luna shimmied up the rain-slicked drainpipe until she reached the roof. Carefully, she pulled the cable with her claws. Zaps gathered his power, glowing brighter and brighter until—WHOOSH!

He shot up into the sky like a rocket, trailing sparkles behind him.

"Thank you, Luna!" Zaps called down, his voice echoing like distant thunder. "You're the best friend a lightning sprite ever had!"

From that night on, Luna's tail tip glowed softly whenever a storm was coming. Mrs. Higgins thought it was just a trick of the light, but Luna knew better. It was Zaps saying hello—and reminding her that the best friends come in the most surprising sizes, sometimes even smaller than a cat's paw.
