Luna and the Lightning Fish
Luna had the most wild hair in all of Maple Street. It stuck out in every direction, bouncing when she walked and swirling when she spun. The other kids called it her lightning hair because it seemed to crackle with energy, just like the summer storms that rolled across the sky.
Every afternoon, Luna went swimming in Miller's Pond. She loved how the cool water wrapped around her like a hug, and how the little fish nibbled harmlessly at her toes. But her favorite thing was watching the water bugs skate across the surface, leaving tiny ripples behind them.
One hot afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy, but Luna didn't want to leave. She loved swimming in the rain!
Suddenly—FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck the middle of the pond.
Luna dove underwater, but when she came up for air, she couldn't believe her eyes. The pond was glowing! Tiny silver fish were darting through the water, leaving trails of light behind them like tiny shooting stars. They only appeared when the lightning flashed!
The next day, Luna told her best friend Maya about the magical fish. But Maya didn't believe her.
"Prove it," Maya said, crossing her arms.
So Luna became a spy. Every afternoon, she hid behind the old willow tree and watched the pond with her binoculars. She waited and waited until another storm came.
"Come here quick!" Luna whispered to Maya, grabbing her hand.
Together, they watched as lightning struck the pond again, and the glowing fish danced in the water.
Maya's eyes grew wide. "They're real!"
Luna smiled. "And now we're the only ones who know their secret."
From that day on, the two girls were the Lightning Pond Spies, guardians of the most magical secret in all of Maple Street. And Luna's wild hair seemed to glow a little brighter whenever she thought about their amazing discovery.
