Luna and the Golden Sphinx

Luna discovered the golden sphinx on the first day of summer vacation, hidden behind a tangle of roses in her grandmother's garden. The sphinx was small—no bigger than a garden gnome—with tiny paws and magnificent wings that shimmered like morning dew.

"Hello," Luna whispered, crouching down.

The sphinx let out a tiny sigh. "Hello, child. I am Cleo, and I have forgotten how to riddle. Without my riddles, I cannot guard the magic of this garden."

Luna's eyes widened. "Maybe I can help!"

Cleo shook her golden mane slowly. "Only the Wonder Vitamin from Crystal Lake can restore my riddle powers. But the lake is deep in the woods, and I am too small to travel there."

"I'll go!" Luna promised, her heart swelling with adventure.

She packed a small satchel with apple slices and her lucky skipping stone. The woods were dappled with sunlight, and ferns tickled her ankles as she walked. Birds sang cheerful melodies, guiding her forward.

At Crystal Lake, the water sparkled like diamonds. There, floating on a lily pad, glowed a single orange pill—the Wonder Vitamin. But as Luna reached for it, the lily pad drifted toward the center of the lake.

She couldn't swim that far! Luna sat on the shore, thinking hard. Then she remembered her skipping stone. She tossed it onto the water, and it hopped across the surface—hop, hop, hop—until it nudged the lily pad back toward her.

"Thank you, water," she whispered, scooping up the Wonder Vitamin in a jar of fresh lake water.

Back in the garden, Cleo swallowed the vitamin with the magical water. Golden sparkles swirled around her as she stretched her wings and grew to full size.

"What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?" Cleo's voice boomed like gentle thunder.

"A mountain!" Luna cheered.

Cleo nuzzled Luna's cheek with her soft nose. "You restored my magic with your courage and kindness. The vitamin helped, but your heart was the real magic."

That summer, Luna visited Cleo every day. They shared riddles, stories, and lemonade under the roses. Luna learned that some problems seem too big to solve alone, but with friendship and a little creativity, even the deepest lakes can be crossed.

And sometimes, the most magical adventures begin in your own grandmother's garden.
