Low Battery, High Stakes

Alex pulled the beanie down lower. Way lower. Bad hair day times a thousand, and of course this was the night Jessica's party would actually be lit.

"Dude, your iPhone's at 5%," Marcus pointed out, like Alex wasn't already spiraling.

"I got it, I got it." But Alex didn't got it. Because somewhere between the football game and Jessica's house, the charging cable had ghosted. Completely vanished into the void.

This was fine. This was totally fine. Alex could just... not use their phone. At a party. Where everyone was documenting everything. Cool. Cool cool cool.

They arrived, and the house was already pulsing. Someone had probably spent three hours on this playlist. Alex hovered near the wall, the hat practically swallowing their forehead now. Why had they chosen today of all days to accidentally wash their hair with body wash? (It had been 6 AM. It had been an emergency.)

"Alex!" It was Riley. The crush. The Riley. "Come help us with the TikTok!"

Oh no. Oh no no no.

"My... uh..." Alex's brain short-circuited. "My phone's kind of..."

Riley grabbed Alex's wrist. "It's fine, use mine! Just be in the video!"

The hat. The iPhone that wasn't theirs. The missing cable. The body-wash hair disaster. It all crashed together in perfect chaos.

But then they were dancing, actually dancing, and Riley was laughing, and nobody was looking at Alex's hair or noticing that their own phone was dead in their pocket. They were just... present. In the moment. Not through a screen.

Later, Alex found the cable tangled in the bottom of their backpack. Of course. It had been there the whole time.

"You gonna charge that?" Marcus asked.

Alex thought about it. The hat came off. The hair wasn't even that bad.

"Nah," they said, and actually meant it. "I'm good."

Sometimes the battery dies at the right moment. Sometimes, you just gotta let it.
