Love, Sweat, and Papaya

Maya's first mistake was agreeing to play padel with Lucas. Her second mistake was staying up until 3 AM doom-scrolling, which left her feeling like a zombie—complete with dark circles and zero coordination.

"You've got this!" Lucas shouted from across the court, his smile absolutely illegal. Maya's best friend Priya had somehow convinced her that learning padel would be the perfect way to get Lucas's attention. Instead, Maya was mostly demonstrating how to whiff every ball.

"I swear I'm usually athletic," Maya groaned, wiping sweat from her forehead. "My bear reflexes are hibernating."

Lucas laughed. "Bear reflexes? Is that when you growl at people?"

"Shut up," Maya said, but she was smiling. This was actually happening—Lucas was talking to her, laughing with her, instead of just being that gorgeous senior she admired from across AP English.

After the game, their group gravitated toward the smoothie shop. Maya's stomach did a backflip when Lucas sat next to her on the outdoor bench.

"So," he said, "what's your deal? Like, besides being terrible at padel?"

"Rude," she said, grinning. "I'm a connoisseur of embarrassing moments and trying new foods. My mom made me try papaya yesterday. It was... an experience."

"Papaya? Really?" Lucas's eyes lit up. "I love papaya. My abuela makes this smoothie with it, lime, and honey. It's life-changing."

"Okay, now I need to try this," Maya said. "But if it's gross, I'm blaming you."

"Deal." He pulled out his phone. "What's your number? I'll text you when my abuela makes it next."

As Maya typed her digits, Priya gave her a subtle thumbs-up from across the table. And for the first time all day, Maya didn't feel like a zombie anymore. She was just a girl who'd played terrible padel, made a cute guy laugh, and had a date-adjacent promise involving papaya smoothies.

Sometimes being yourself—awkward moments and all—was exactly the right move.
