Marcus floated in the hotel pool at 2 AM, the only movement in the dead-still water. Swimming laps had become his insomnia ritual since Elena left—back and forth, counting strokes, trying to outpace the racing thoughts that always caught up anyway.
At forty-seven, he was a Senior Vice President at Auster Capital, the kind of title that should have felt like arrival but felt instead like running in place. The corporate retreat in CancĂşn was supposed to be about team building, about riding the bull market they'd all helped create. But Marcus had spent three days watching his colleagues get drunk and talk about money they'd never spend while he felt himself disappearing.
That's when he noticed her: Sarah from Compliance, sitting poolside with a tablet, fully clothed at 2 AM.
"Can't sleep either?"
She didn't startle. "Marcus. I was hoping we'd talk."
She slid the tablet across the table. Trading records. His name, timestamps that didn't match, offshore accounts routing through the Caymans.
"I'm not here to fire you," she said softly. "I'm here to offer you a choice. Continue being their bear—shorting your own ethics, betting against yourself—or become something else."
"A spy?" Marcus laughed, bitter. "For who?"
"For the truth. For everyone they're underwater without even knowing it." She gestured to the tablet. "This isn't just about insider trading, Marcus. It's about what happens when the bull runs out of steam. About who drowns first."
He thought of Elena leaving because she said he'd sold himself piece by piece until nothing remained worth loving. He thought of the hollow feeling in his chest that no amount of money or promotion could fill.
"If I say no?"
"Then I'm just a concerned colleague who noticed some irregularities. But you'll always know you could have been something more than a drowning man pretending to swim."
Marcus pulled himself from the pool, water dripping onto the concrete like seconds ticking away. For the first time in years, he didn't feel like he was holding his breath.
"Show me everything."
